Brentwood or "Burnt wood" came to be a resting place for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, travelling the Roman road running from Colchester into London.
One local village is called Pilgrims Hatch. In 1221 a small chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket was built for the pilgrims. The ruin stands in the centre of the High Street, next to the tourist information office. The Brentwood Theatre and The Hermit are the main cultural buildings in Brentwood; along with the Brentwood International Hall.
