Although Croydon is best known as a major business and shopping centre, visitors may be surprised to discover the diversity of its character. Historical buildings, cultural venues and placid green spaces co-exist happily with the multinational stores, office blocks and bustling nightlife of this town in the south of Greater London. Remarkably, Croydon has its own windmill. Built in the 1850s, Shirley Windmill replaced the original post mill which was razed by fire. The whole history of the area is explained at the Museum of Croydon, found at the Clocktower arts centre, which also contains art galleries, a library and a cinema. Live music, comedy and theatre are presented here too. Other venues include the Fairfield Halls and the Warehouse Theatre. Croydon's past lives on in some of its buildings: the Whitgift Almshouses, dating back to the 16th Century; the 1000-year-old Croydon Palace, once home to Archbishops of Canterbury; and the ancient Parish Church, rebuilt in 1867. Not far away, the beautiful Palladian-style mansion of Addington Palace, with its landscaped grounds and golf course, is well worth visiting. Croydon acts as a gateway to Surrey in the south, Kent to the south east and Berkshire to the west.
