Wandsworth is "groovier than everywhere else in Britain", according to an article in The Guardian. Certainly, house prices in this riverside district of south-west London have soared in tandem with the rapid regeneration happening here recently. The river Wandle enters the Thames at Wandsworth, and it's at the waterside that the scenery has changed most dramatically, with new developments incorporating swish apartments, penthouses, gardens, terraces, jetties, bars, restaurants, shops and river transport. In the town centre, too, there are ongoing schemes for better housing, shops and leisure facilities. The old Arndale Centre in the High Street has been transformed into the Southside shopping complex including a multi-screen cinema and a state-of-the-art gym. But progress also comes with loss. Young's Ram Brewery has been sold to developers, although some of its historic buildings and equipment may escape the bulldozer. Wandsworth Museum is being closed indefinitely, pending a move to new premises. Still, rows of attractive terraced and semi-detached houses recall the area's history, and Wandsworth Common is enduringly popular with its lakes, woodlands, grasslands and sports facilities. Bellevue Road, opposite, is filled with fashionable boutiques and restaurants. Hereabouts, the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building has been restored to its former Gothic glory.
